In unity there is strength

Resources for Our Members.

Representing the 8 communities of Alaska’s North Slope. to preserve our traditions, protect our lands, and shape our future.

Resources:

Part of VOICE’s purpose as an organization is to be the local knowledge center for our communities regarding developments in the Arctic Slope region, serving as a conduit for information transfer to increase communication and information-sharing amongst North Slope entities.

From housing and grant assistance to climate change and subsistence issues, these valuable resources are made available to help improve the lives of North Slope residents and the communities they call home.

General Resources:

Voice of the Arctic Iñupiat (VOICE) provides essential knowledge to navigate the North Slope's cultural, economic, and environmental landscape. Whether you're learning about our heritage or supporting our communities, these resources advance Iñupiat self-determination.

Videos:
The Duck-In:
In spring 1961, the Iñupiat people of Utqiaġvik stage the “Duck In,” a collective act of civil disobedience against federal migratory bird hunting regulations, asserting traditional hunting rights. Their unified resistance compelled federal authorities to drop charges by late 1961, affirming Iñupiat self-determination. The video highlights the history of the event with interviews from people who participated in the unified protest.
Nuclear Geologic Engineering:
In 1959, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, led by Edward Teller, proposes Project Chariot. A plan to create a harbor 30 miles south of Point Hope using multiple nuclear explosions and reassuring the local people that it would be completely safe. Local opposition, led by Point Hope leaders like Howard Rock and supported by scientific critiques like the “Lichens Report” and the Tundra Times, leads to its cancellation in August 1962, marking another early triumph of Iñupiat self-determination.
Joseph Upicksoun at AFN, 1971:
Joseph Upicksoun was an instrumental Inupiat leader during the fight for Alaska Native Land Claims in the 1960’s and early 70’s. The North Slope was the only region to vote no to ANCSA as we know it now. The video above is a clip of Joe’s farewell speech to the Alaska Federation of Natives.
Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC):
Arctic Slope Regional Corporation was incorporated on June 22, 1972 after the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. ASRC came from humble beginnings, beginning with 3 small companies in Utqiagvik, AK and 3,700 Iñupiat Shareholders. It is now the largest company in Alaska, a title that ASRC has held for over 30 years, and now has over 14,000 Iñupiat shareholders.
North Slope Borough:
The North Slope Borough was formed on July 2, 1972 as a way to take control of our lands and ensure the people of the North Slope benefitted from the development that was going to take place on lands taken from us by the state government. Our early leaders were sued by the State of Alaska when they filed the petition for the Borough’s creation and our leaders emerged victorious. This victory and the creation of the North Slope Borough has been described as the largest peaceful transfer of wealth in the history of the world.
