Voice of the Arctic Iñupiat serves the eight communities of Alaska’s North Slope Borough – the northernmost municipality in the United States, encompassing nearly 95,000 square miles. The North Slope region stretches from the Brooks Range north to the Arctic Ocean, with its western coastline along the Chukchi Sea and its eastern shores on the Beaufort Sea. The North Slope Iñupiat have inhabited these lands for hundreds of years and have a rich cultural history that is based around subsistence activities and surviving on the resources from the land and sea.

Utqiaġvik, AK:

Utqiaġvik, AK: Utqiaġvik is the northernmost community in the United States, an Iñupiat settlement on the coast of the Arctic Ocean, where the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas meet. Situated 320 miles above the Arctic Circle, Utqiaġvik is the economic, administrative, and transportation hub of the North Slope Borough. Subsistence hunting, fishing and whaling are central to the local culture and economy and most residents continue to live a subsistence lifestyle. As the Borough seat of government, Utqiaġvik functions as the central hub for regional health and social services. The community is headquarters for the North Slope Borough, Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, Arctic Slope Native Association and the Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital, Iñupiat Community of the Arctic Slope, and the North Slope Borough School District. Utqiaġvik is also home to Ukpeaġvik Inupiat Corporation, the City of Utqiaġvik, and the Native Village of Barrow. Sitting at the edge of the continent, Utqiaġvik is home to a still functioning Distant Early Warning site providing U.S. National Defense, home to the Barrow Arctic Research Center, and former Naval Arctic Research Laboratory. Utqiaġvik, formerly known as Barrow, is one of four North Slope communities situated within the boundaries of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.
